Delete Cyberbullying
West Rocks Middle School Participates in Digital Smarts Event
Students at West Rocks Middle School participated in a Digital Smarts event sponsored by Optimum Community that addressed the subject of Cyberbullying. Senator Bob Duff and Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling attended the event and spoke to the students about the dangers of Cyberbullying. Teacher Emilia Fusarelli explained the students’ use of Optimum Community’s “Delete Cyberbullying” materials and introduced eighth-grade student presenters who tackled the subject of digital safety and cyberbullying for over 200 sixth-grade students in the audience. A Q&A with students and Senator Duff and Mayor Rilling followed. Afterwards, both Senator Duff and Mayor Rilling signed “Delete Cyberbullying” certificates certifying that the students have completed Optimum Community’s program. Student presenters also sign a large “Delete Cyberbullying” pledge. At the close of the event, Principal Moore was presented with a $2500 check for furtherance of the school’s anti-bullying programs.
“I would like to congratulate each of the students who participated in the Digital Smarts program today that was both interesting and informative,” said State Senator Duff. “Since technology is such an integral part of the lives of young people, it’s imperative that we address issues of online safety. I believe every student here now has a clearer understanding of how to best navigate the web and the importance of treating others with respect. I applaud Optimum Community for bringing this program to the students in our area.”
“Middle-school students might not be aware of the dangers and potential repercussions of cyberbullying,” said Mayor Rilling. “And that is why events that open regarding issues like this are so important. I would like to thank Optimum Community for continuing to provide educational programs such as this.”
