The Weather Channel Poster Contest
Bridgeport Students Win Prizes and Party for Weather Channel Poster Contest
Optimum Community hosted a prize presentation event for winners of The Weather Channel’s poster contest at Interdistrict Discovery Magnet School. Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch joined the event and congratulated the students for participating in the contest. Students watched a video from the American Meteorological Society that featured some of their own classmates. Following the video, the student winners were presented with their prizes. In the 3rd – 5th grade category, there were three runners up and eighteen honorable mentions; the 6th – 8th grade category had three runners up and fourteen honorable mentions. Runners up all received crank radios and the honorable mentions received flashlights. The school was awarded a personal weather station for having the highest percentage of participation in the contest and the students were treated to a pizza party.
“In Bridgeport, we’re creating a place where our kids and grandkids will want to live, work and raise a family. And just like these great students have learned through this project, part of that means protecting the environment and ensuring children have cleaner air to breathe. Congratulations to the students from Discovery Magnet School for their excellent work, and thank you to Optimum Community and The Weather Channel for giving these kids an opportunity to showcase their creativity and their love of science,” said Mayor Finch. “Bridgeport is doing its part to mitigate climate change by creating hundreds green jobs and leading the way on clean energy. It’s just one more way we’re ensuring our city continues getting better every day.”
