Knicks Summer Reading
Read to Achieve Knicks Summer Reading Event at Camp Panawok
Optimum Community and Madison Square Garden visited Camp Panawok at George Washington Elementary School to bring a Knicks Summer Reading event to over 100 Kindergarten through third grade campers. White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach participated in the event along with Former Knicks Superstar John Starks. After welcoming remarks, Mayor Roach and John Starks spoke about the importance of literacy, and then read aloud from the popular children’s book, Allie’s Basketball Dream by Barbara E. Barber. Following the reading, the children took part in a fun, interactive quiz about the book and participated in a raffle and autograph session. The children were also given a copy of the book discussed.
“The lazy days of summer are a perfect time for young people to take time out to read and be transported through literature to any number of exciting places,” said Mayor Roach. “Innovative programs like today’s help foster a love of reading and also provide an opportunity for children to interact firsthand with an NBA superstar like John Starks. I want to thank Optimum and Madison Square Garden for making this available to the students in our area.”
