Somers High School Hunger Banquet Charity Champions Fundraiser
Somers Town Supervisor Rick Morrissey joined Optimum Community to recognize the Somers High School STAT Club for their participation in the 2014-15 Charity Champions program. The check presentation took place during Somers High School’s Hunger Banquet fundraising event, in which proceeds went to the students’ charity of choice, LaCarpio Refugee Fund. Over 50 students, parents and community members attended the banquet, and each guest received a card with a profile of either a poor or an affluent person. The meal they received reflected what the individual on their card would most likely eat and was designed to spark discussion about hunger and those in need. Supervisor Morrissey spoke to the guests and congratulated the STAT Club students, presenting them with a Proclamation. Following his remarks, the students were presented with $500 in seed money and a $1000 donation to LaCarpio Refugee Fund from Cablevision.
“Everyone, especially children, deserve a house to live in and healthy food to eat,” said Town Supervisor Morrissey. “Through their fundraising efforts and participation in Optimum Community’s Charity Champions program, the students here at Somers High School are helping children in need in La Carpio, Costa Rica. I applaud their dedication and enthusiasm.”
