Southampton Students Take Part in Meet the Leaders Taping
Southampton High School students took part in a Meet the Leaders @ School taping that focused on volunteerism and community service. The taping featured guests Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst and Katy’s Courage founder Jim Stewart. Katy’s Courage is a non-profit organization that honors the life of Katy Stewart, a young girl who died of a rare pediatric cancer at the age of 12. Southampton students became involved with this charity when participating in this year’s Charity Champions program and have been fundraising for them since the start of this school year. The students had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with Supervisor Throne-Holst and Mr. Stewart, asking them questions that covered topics from public service and leadership to volunteerism and the mission of Katy’s Courage. The students were then recognized for their participation in Charity Champions and their success in raising funds for Katy’s Courage. Rotary Interact Club Advisor Sarah Fitzsimmons presented Mr. Stewart with a $1,000 check on behalf of the students and spoke about their fundraising efforts throughout the year. Ten student Volunteers of the Year, represented by student Guillerre Cardona, were also recognized.
“Each of the students participating today are terrific role models and represent what public service and leadership is all about,” said Town Supervisor Throne-Holst. “They have selected a truly deserving charity and have worked hard throughout the year raising funds for Katy’s Courage. I commend them for their efforts and commitment to others. I also thank Cablevision for making local students part of informative programs like Meet the Leaders.”
