East Lake Elementary School 6th grader Jacqueline Paduano was announced as the grand prize winner in Optimum Community’s inaugural Black History Month Essay Contest. Jacqueline’s essay was chosen from more than 450 essays in the middle school category. Students throughout the tristate area were invited to submit an essay of 500 words or less naming an African American, past or present, with whom they would choose to spend a day and explain why. Jacqueline’s essay earned her an iPad and detachable keyboard.
Jacqueline’s essay was about music superstar Stevie Wonder who, though blind since shortly after birth, became one of the most creative and loved musical performers of the late 20th century.
