Brentwood North Middle School 8th grader Nzinga Anderson was selected as a runner-up in Optimum Community’s inaugural Black History Month Essay Contest. Nzinga’s essay was about contemporary cake designer Miriam Osei, owner of Brooklyn’s BCakeNY.
Students throughout the tristate area were invited to submit an essay of 500 words or less naming an African American with whom they would choose to spend a day and explain why. Nzinga’s entry was selected from more than 450 essays, and she won an iPad Mini and received a citation from special guest, Suffolk County Legislator Monica Martinez.
