Black History Month Essay Runner-Up Awarded Prize at Barack Obama Elementary School
Barack Obama Elementary School 4th grader Danna Morgan was announced as a runner-up in Optimum Community’s inaugural Black History Month Essay Contest. Danna’s essay was chosen from over 300 essays in the elementary school category. Students throughout the tristate area were invited to submit an essay of 500 words or less naming an African American, past or present, with whom they would choose to spend a day and explain why. Danna was awarded with an iPad mini as her prize as well as a citation from the Village of Hempstead by Deputy Mayor Luis Figueroa.
Danna was inspired to write her essay about First Lady Michelle Obama, the first African American First Lady and an advocate for healthy lifestyles to combat childhood obesity.
