Knicks Read to Achieve
Summer Reading Event Held at Queens Library's Lefrak City Branch
Optimum Community partnered with the MSG and NY Knicks to bring the 9th Annual Knicks Read to Achieve program to the Queens Library's Lefrak City Branch. Approximately 75 youngsters participated in the event which featured a read-along of the book Salt in His Shoes by Delores Jordan with NY Knicks Alumnus John Starks and NYC Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras. The Councilwoman and Mr. Starks spoke to the children about the importance of literacy and reading over the summer. They read aloud from “Salt in His Shoes,” a children’s book by Deloris Jordan. Following the reading, the children took part in an interactive quiz about the book and participated in a raffle and autograph session.
“Literacy is an essential ingredient for success,” said Councilwoman Ferreras. “Not only is it vital for succeeding in school but it also strengthens self-confidence and introduces a child to a world of new possibilities. I applaud Optimum Community, the Knicks and Madison Square Garden for a program that helps foster a love of reading among children for years to come.”
