Black History Month Essay Grand Prize Winner Celebrated at Our Lady of Guadalupe School
Our Lady of Guadalupe School 5th grader Arianna Asarian was selected as the grand prize winner of Optimum Community’s inaugural Black History Month Essay Contest. Arianna’s essay was about Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, who won gold medals in the individual all-around and team competitions at the 2012 summer games.
Students throughout the tristate area were invited to submit an essay of 500 words or less naming an African American with whom they would choose to spend a day and explain why. Arianna’s prize-winning entry was selected from more than 300 essays. Arianna won an iPad and keyboard and received a citation from NY Senator Martin Golden’s office.
