SAR High School Academy Students Raise Funds for S.H.I.N.E. Afterschool Program
As part of their participation in Optimum Community’s Charity Champions program, students from SAR High School Academy named S.H.I.N.E. Afterschool Program as their charity for which to raise money and awareness. Westchester County Legislator Virginia Perez was there as Optimum Community reps presented the charity with a $1,000 donation on behalf of SAR’s students.
S.H.I.N.E. (Students of Hostos are Inspired and Nurtured to Excellence) is an after-school program serving students in grades K-6 at the Eugenio Maria de Hostos MicroSociety School (Hostos), located in a socio-economically disadvantaged section of Yonkers where a majority of students comes from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. S.H.I.N.E. provides students with homework assistance, tutoring and mentoring, arts instruction, hands-on projects to teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts; also provides opportunities for free play, among other activities.
