The Lessons of Giving
Students at
Central Boulevard Elementary School in Bethpage learn quickly that there is no such thing as being too young when it comes to lending a helping hand, especially on Thoughtful Thursday. Each month, on a designated Thursday, students perform acts of kindness. They have completed many community service projects, benefiting several organizations including: Meals-On-Wheels, local pre-schools and assisted living facilities, and Operation Write Home, and many more. This month, the Thoughtful Thursday activity was creating winter decorations and writing positive warm winter wishes for local senior citizens, bringing cheer and comfort to those who may have difficulty going out in the winter.
The school-wide initiative began three years ago by Sarah Glassman, school social worker, and Patricia Tierney, second grade inclusion teacher have all the students excited about doing for others.
