Home Sweet Home
For more than 15 years the Habitat for Humanity Club at
Connetquot High School has been giving students the opportunity to touch the lives of families who need a place to call home. Recently, the students worked with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, which for the past 25 years has built homes for 165 families. The students spent the day tirelessly assisting the professional staff from Habitat by swinging hammers, carrying plywood, measuring, and drilling at a new home in Bellport. As participants in Optimum Community’s Charity Champions, which supports students’ charitable activities and donates money to a high school-selected charity, students commit time and effort to raising money, competing against other schools, and contributing the funds raised.
When asked about the experience, student Frankie M. shared, “I like helping with the community and giving back to people. Fellow club member Casey A. noted, “It’s a lot of work but it feels really good to know that you’re helping people.”
