Building Benches and Making a Difference
At
Farmingdale High School, there’s a special group of students working together to make a difference in their community. As participants in Optimum Community’s Charity Champions, which supports students’ charitable activities and donates money to a high school-selected charity, the students commit time and effort to raising money, competing against other schools, and contributing the funds raised. Recently, members of the Technology Honor Society and Carpentry Club, built benches and end tables to donate to AHRC Nassau. AHRC is not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of people with developmental disabilities. When asked about this experience, club member Thomas S. shared, “I think it’s a great idea, people need a little bit of happiness, and I like turning a piece of wood into something that will help them out.” Esther S. noted, “It feels really good and I feel happy and empowered and it’s great because everyone came today to help.” Anthony G added, “Anything that helps the community and local areas is good for us and everyone.”
