Quilts Made With Love
Fourth graders at
Mills Pond Elementary in St. James were on a mission to make a difference in the lives of some Long Island women and children. Forty-three members of the Mills Pond Cares Club, run by teachers Melissa Taylor, Diana Lanze, and Kristin Quail, created quilts for battered women and children from a local shelter. The children assembled the no knit felt quilts by layering two pieces of felt, slicing the edges, and then knotting the edges together to connect both pieces. The students also made cards for the residents, reminding them that they are remembered and cared about. Club member Justin W. shared, “This project inspired me to help other people in many more ways. I am so happy to help others my age!” Haily L. said, “I wanted to help out those that were in need of warmth. I am so happy that they have these warm quilts during the coldest season. I feel proud,” Ayla C. added, “I feel badly when people don't have everything they need to survive. I am happy they can keep their families warm!” Kristin Quail, one of the teachers overseeing the club noted, “As their advisor, I am beyond proud of their efforts. They continue to amaze me.”
