Welcome to Wyandanch
At
Milton L. Olive Middle School in Wyandanch, the school’s Earth Rangers, an after-school, environmental club, created a welcome packet for new families living in their community. The students realized that many families in Wyandanch do not have town recycling buckets, and weren’t able to recycle at home. In discussing ways to help people, the group of sixth and seventh graders decided to develop a packet of information for those new to their area. The packets contain information about how to get a recycling bucket, a list of food pantries in the community, and other environmental health information that the Earth Rangers members developed. The packets are being distributed at the local Pre-K and Kindergarten school registration. When asked their thoughts concerning their efforts, Ranger member Rosa M. shared, “This will help our little community grow and help our community get involved in our project.” Princess Sapphire A. added, “We are doing this to let new people know what we are about, and when they read it, they will have an idea about this community.” Charles Z. said, “We love to help out newcomers to Wyandanch and especially the new children who come here.” Lastly, Javier R. exclaimed, “Our community should be welcoming new families; they should feel at home and be good neighbors, so a welcoming packet is an excellent idea.”
