The Mitten Tree

Recently, the students and staff at Rolling Hills Primary School in Commack, learned that even small gestures can warm the lives of others. In January, The Mitten Tree, a new school-wide initiative was started. The children brought in new hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves, and decorated a tree in the lobby of the school reflecting their generosity. Student Jane P. shared, “I enjoyed putting the mittens on the tree to help other people.” “It made me feel good to give the warm mittens to people that would be cold,” added Michael P. Nicholas O. said, “Helping people stay warm in the winter keeps them healthy.” Lastly, Audrey S. piped in, “I felt happy to donate to people who did not have things to keep them warm.”

The beautiful donations were given to the residents of Madonna Heights in Dix Hills, a school that teaches, strengthens and encourages young women, adults, and children who are healing from all types of traumas. The Rolling Hills children helped pack the donations, and wrote and decorated letters they sent to the residents of Madonna Heights.
