Comfort In A Kit
SUNY Old Westbury students are on a mission to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in their own special way. Combining Valentine’s Day and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, a call to service initiative by the Corporation for National & Community Service, more than 30 students prepared Valentine's Day activity kits and care packages for the patients at Cohen Children's Medical Center. The students hope that the activity kits will provide comfort for the pediatric patients as they wait for, or recover from treatments.
This is the third year that SUNY Old Westbury has participated in the service day and many of the participants were eager to share their thoughts. Josiah Pierre, 24, said, “What I will remember the most about this day is that we did something incredible for children by showing some SUNY Old Westbury love! Everyone has a story and everyone has something that they might be going through, but it really feels good that we can all come together and help others.” Olivia O'Keefe, 19, exclaimed, “The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service reminds me to not only do community service today, but give back to the community somehow every day.” Lastly, Divine Nisbeth, 23 added, "To do a service project for the kids at Cohen Children's Medical Center feels good; I'm happy we get a chance to be good role models."
