Teamwork At Its Best
Members of the
Valley Stream North High School National Honor Society and English as a New Language Buddy Program, collaborated recently to make more than 1,000 sandwiches to donate to the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead. Gathering after school in the cafeteria, students from both groups, 120 in total, worked together for a couple of hours making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in need. Leading up to the event, students gathered supplies, including more than 100 loaves of bread. With each sandwich, students included hand-written messages of encouragement. When the students were asked about the experience they had a lot to share. Ahmad B. said, "The best feeling in life is helping others. That's why we do this." "Helping others has no race or religion. Everyone should be involved and help to make the world a better place," noted Leila J. David G. exclaimed, "Being in a program like this makes me have faith that there are people out there helping those in need." "It made me feel wonderful knowing that a lot of people will benefit from the little things that we did together, just by making sandwiches," added Denisse C. Lastly, Nicole E. shared, "I thought making sandwiches for the INN was a great way to give back. Not everyone can give their whole day to volunteer, but everyone can take some time out of their busy day to help. We are often unaware of the problems that other people in our community face because, we often take all that we have for granted. Just giving back a little can make a huge impact."
