A Wave Of Giving
Recently,
Massapequa High School students transformed their gym into a beach for the third “Catch a Wave” rock concert benefitting Winthrop’s Hospital Cancer Center for Kids. Over the years, this community project has donated over $17,000 to the cancer center. As participants in Optimum Community’s Charity Champions, which supports students’ charitable activities and donates money to a high school-selected charity, the students commit time and effort to raising money, competing against other schools, and contributing the funds raised.
In addition to the student concert, tables were set up along the boardwalk with beach-themed items for purchase, raffles, food and face painting, with all proceeds going to the charity. When asked to share their feelings on the event, Christopher shared, “It was rewarding to be a part of something bigger than myself—it is something I can look back on with pride.” Sydney, this year’s student leader added, “It was an incredible experience working with my peers and our school community for a wonderful cause.”
